The revolution led to the death of Rodriguez, a favorite singer-songwriter of fans around the world.
On Wednesday his official website confirmed the death of the 81-year-old.
“It is with great sadness that we at Sugarman.org announce that Sixto Diaz Rodriguez passed away earlier today,” the website stated.
“We extend our most heartfelt condolences to his daughters – Sandra, Eva, and Regan – and to all his family.
“May His Dear Soul Rest In Peace.”
Although the cause of his death is unknown, he had suffered severe strokes in recent years.
The musician was the subject of the 2012 Oscar-winning documentary Searching for Sugar Man, which captured the hearts and attention of millions around the world.
The documentary focuses on the life and discovery of Rodriguez and is directed by Swedish filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul.
After his first two albums failed to sell many copies in the US in the 1970s, Michigan-born gave up on his dream as a musician and turned to manual struggle.
However, in South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, he learned years later that his music had gained popularity elsewhere in Botswana.

The 2012 documentary, Searching for Sugar Man, was based on two South African fans who tried to track down Rodriguez in the 1990s. However, It also won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 2013 Oscars.
Following the film’s release, Rodriguez experienced a career revival and went back on tour. They have also performed on TV, reissued their albums as well as released a collection of records.
