Who Composed the Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny Score?
John Williams (born John Towner Williams, February 8, 1932, in Queens, New York) is an American composer and conductor widely regarded as one of the most influential film composers in history. Across a career of more than 100 film scores, he has written the music for Star Wars, Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Superman, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, the Indiana Jones series, the first two Home Alone films, Hook, the first two Jurassic Park films, Schindler’s List, and the first three Harry Potter films, among many others. He has won five Academy Awards from a record 54 nominations and 26 Grammy Awards, and has scored nearly 30 films across a five-decade collaboration with director Steven Spielberg.
Williams recorded the Dial of Destiny score between June 2022 and February 2023 at the Sony Scoring Stage, conducting alongside orchestrator William Ross and performed by the Hollywood Studio Symphony. He wrote over 90 minutes of music, blending a new theme for Helena (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) and the film’s title artifact with reworked material from earlier Indiana Jones scores. A second recording of “Helena’s Theme,” arranged for violin and orchestra and featuring German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, was released as a single ahead of the album and went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition in 2024.
In mid-2022, around the time scoring began, Williams suggested this would be his final film score before retirement, then walked the claim back within months. He has since confirmed he is not fully retired: he came out of scoring hiatus to compose music for Steven Spielberg’s 2026 film Disclosure Day, released June 12, 2026 — the 30th film the two have made together.
