Who Composed Faraway Downs
The original 2008 film Australia was scored by David Hirschfelder, Baz Luhrmann’s regular collaborator. For the 2023 Faraway Downs series, however, Hulu brought in composer Kara Talve of Bleeding Fingers Music to write and record a new score for the six-part re-cut. Hirschfelder still receives a music credit on the series — his cue “Across the Room / Begin the Beguine” (performed with Stephen and Alan Pigram) is featured in Episode 4 — but the bulk of the series’ new scoring work is Talve’s.
The series stars Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman and is set around the fictional Faraway Downs cattle station in Australia’s Northern Territory. With its episodic format, the series presents a unique opportunity to dive deeper into the complex storytelling that defined the original film.
