This post originally covered Marvel Studios’ planned “Blade” reboot, which at the time of writing (early 2024) was tracking toward a November 2025 release with Mahershala Ali reprising the Daywalker role he was teased in during a 2021 post-credits scene. As of August 2026, that release never happened — Blade spent seven years in development hell and has since been pulled from Marvel’s release calendar. Because the film never began principal photography, no composer was ever hired and no soundtrack exists.
Marvel first announced the project at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2019, with Mahershala Ali cast as Blade, reimagining the vampire hunter Wesley Snipes had played in three live-action films between 1998 and 2004. What followed was one of the most troubled productions in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s history.

A Timeline of Blade’s Production Troubles
Director changes: Bassam Tariq was hired to direct in 2020 but exited the project in September 2022. Yann Demange (Lovecraft Country, White Boy Rick) was hired to replace him in November 2022, but he too exited in June 2024, reportedly over creative differences. No director has been confirmed since.
Writer changes: The screenplay passed through multiple writers over the years, including Stacy Osei-Kuffour, Michael Starrbury, Beau DeMayo, Michael Green (Logan), and Nic Pizzolatto (True Detective) — a rotating door that industry press cited as a symptom of the project never landing on a workable script.
Cast changes: Mia Goth (Pearl, MaXXXine) was cast as the villain Lilith and remained attached through the film’s later development. Delroy Lindo and Aaron Pierre were both cast in undisclosed roles at different points but subsequently exited the project — Pierre has said he departed over script changes.
Is Blade Cancelled?
As a standalone film, effectively yes. By mid-2026, Blade had been removed from Marvel’s official release schedule after years of delays. In a July 2026 interview with GQ, Mahershala Ali suggested the studio’s inaction spoke for itself, saying that if Marvel really wanted to complete the project, “they would’ve done it.” Some entertainment insiders, including Daniel Richtman, have since reported that Marvel may still fold the character into a future ensemble project such as Avengers: Secret Wars (2027) rather than release a standalone Blade film — but that remains unconfirmed speculation, not an official announcement.
Because the film never began shooting, no score was ever recorded and no soundtrack was ever released. Earlier promotional materials, including a teaser that circulated in December 2023, previewed footage rather than any confirmed music.
Genres (as originally planned): Action, Fantasy, Horror, Sci-Fi
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a Blade soundtrack?
No. Marvel’s Blade reboot never began principal photography, so no composer was hired and no score or soundtrack was ever produced.
Is the Marvel Blade movie cancelled?
As a standalone film, effectively yes — it was removed from Marvel’s release schedule by mid-2026 after years of director and writer changes. Marvel has not ruled out using the character elsewhere in future projects.
Is Mahershala Ali still playing Blade?
Ali remained attached to the role throughout development, but as of his July 2026 GQ interview, he indicated the studio had not moved forward with completing the film.
Who was cast in the Blade reboot?
Mahershala Ali was set to star as Blade, with Mia Goth cast as the villain Lilith. Delroy Lindo and Aaron Pierre were both cast in undisclosed roles at different points but later exited the project.
Why did Blade take so long and never get made?
The project cycled through two directors (Bassam Tariq, then Yann Demange) and at least five credited writers over seven years without settling on a workable script, while its release date was pushed back repeatedly before being removed from the schedule entirely.
